15 BRITISH FOOD TO TRY

Here are 15 British food to try next time you come to the British Isles or make them from scratch when you get home because they are seriously tasty.

Are you thinking of British food to try on your next visit to the UK?

Or you are curious about British cuisine?

Here is a list of British food that we have tried, made and tested thus recommend you to try.

Before living in England I did not have any clue what traditional or classic British food is like.

Fresh, local and seasonal produce is available where we live which makes us (me) cook more than go out.

The occasional dining out happens but we eat in most days.

During those days out we try food from North to South or sample cooking from all around the world

One good thing about eating in is we decide (or not) which cuisine we base our meals on.

Britain has a rich history and culture and that play a big factor in the British cuisine.

We will not talk about the history of British cuisine as I have much to learn about that topic.

My husband and daughter suggest a lot of vegetable based meals.

British food ideas come along too.

From breakfast ideas to main dishes and especially puddings.

Since Mamon loves to work in the kitchen and experiment with or alongside me we tried loads of meals.

I leave the roasting and most meat based cooking to the husband because he does it better than me.

The British recipes I have learnt are from my mother in law and from my husband.

Online is a good source of meal ideas and recipes too.

Where do you find traditional recipes from?

Yes, there is the classic Sunday roast which is best left to the experts to explain as I am a mere consumer.

Pubs, butchers, cafes and other places to eat serve pies, full English, pasties, sandwiches and puddings which I will venture more on to.

But for now here is our…

MUST TRY BRITISH FOOD

BAKED BEANS ON TOAST

A simple dish and easy to put together.

Comforting.

Pick up a tin of beans.

Open and heat it up.

While that is heating pop slices of bread in the toaster.

It only takes 5 minutes to prepare. Ultra easy.

If you could be bothered slather butter on the toast.

Or top with cheese. Which Amon goes for.

I have seen recipes and other ways to make this but in our house we keep it simple.

Beans on toast for breakfast, lunch or supper.

See us make it for lunch here when we were late back for lunch one day.

HOMEMADE CHIPS

Why make it homemade when you can just pop at the chip shop?

Sometimes it is easier to make it at home than drive to the shop.

If there were suitable potatoes and enough oil in the house, the smell of frying chips is so good.

Head on to google or youtube and the information for homemade chips is endless.

Not the hardest thing to make as we show you on one of our videos.

Why not give them a try today?

Serve them with battered fish and peas.

BATTERED FISH

Speaking of battered fish we have an easy recipe for it here for when you want to whip up something that looks like a lot of work but really it is not.

A popular British food which we have found to be a favourite especially on Fridays.

Crispy on the outside and well cooked fish inside.

Paired with chunky chips and scoop of peas.

Any sauces?

Yes, please. Wedge of lemon, tartare sauce, sprinkle of salt, malt vinegar… Enjoy!

CRISP SANDWICH

What goes in a crisp sandwich?

Two thin slices of bread.

A packet of crisps. Any flavour of choice.

Butter as needed.

Add ham or cheese.

This is a perfect sandwich.

Someone I know crushes the crisps!

BANGERS AND MASH

A dish consisting of sausages and mashed potatoes served with gravy.

Easy peasy no lemon squeezy.

Pop the sausages in the oven.

Boil some potatoes.

Mash the potatoes when cooked.

Make your own gravy if you want or can.

Serve up savoury sausages with a big helping of creamy mash and pour gravy over it.

Dinner complete.

Every household for sure has their own way of prepping and serving this.

I would love to try.

TOAD IN THE HOLE

The name of this traditional dish sounds odd but one would be pleased to find out that the toad is actually a sausages in Yorskshire pudding batter.

Oh pudding batter!

Not the sweet kind or dessert.

No not that kind but we will get to the dessert section soon.

So, back to the dish. It is sausages cooked in Yorkshire pudding and served with onion gravy.

There are non meat versions as well which we will try sooner rather than later.

TRADITIONAL PANCAKES

Traditionally made on Shrove Tuesday these are easy to love pancakes.

They are not fluffy but rather thin or crepe like.

On Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent, rich food such as eggs, milk and butter are used up before the fasting season.

A bit of background there and a little video here on how to make pancakes.

We used the family’s recipe on the video but when I have not learnt it yet I followed this recipe which gave us great results every time.

SCONES

Who would say no to scones?

Those tall and fluffy baked goodies are worth the effort to make at home.

Try the ones at a local cafe but once you get home give them a go.

Mary Berry’s recipe is our go to.

PUDDING OR DESSERT AREA

Shall we move on to our puddings?

To finish the meal, there is a big choice for those with the sweet tooth.

Have a cup of tea with it and enjoy!

STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING

Convinced by Amon’s daddy to make sticky toffee pudding, there is no going back when you made a batch.

We followed Nigella’s recipe for this pudding and everyone was pleased.

There might be other good recipes out there but we are sticking with this one for now.

We are willing to try yours if you give us permission though.

BANOFFEE PIE

A pie made from bananas, cream, caramel sauce on a pastry or biscuit base.

An easy recipe even a child could make.

Amon made this for us which have been devoured instantly.

TREACLE TART

This traditional dessert is one we have not tried to make because I am a little hesitant about the treacle and pastry.

And we trust the bakeshop that we buy this from so I have second thoughts on making this at home.

When they stop shop I might give it a try.

BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING

After the Christmas holidays a few years ago, we still had a panettone that we forgot to eat.

This was a good opportunity to try Gennaro Contaldo’s Panettone Bread and Butter Pudding.

This dessert is made with buttered slices of bread, ideally stale, spinkled with raisins, custard and baked.

With Gennaro’s recipe, he spreads chocolate hazelnut on the bread which is a nice and different way.

This uses up old bread and other ingredients which might already be in the cupboard and fridge.

Bread and butter pudding is filling and hits the sweet spot.

ETON MESS

Eton mess screams summer.

A little reading on Wikipedia tells of how this dessert has come to life.

Tuck into a refreshing bowl of meringue, whipped cream and seasonal strawberries.

Loads of recipes to try online and could also be made any time of year to remind us of summer.

KNICKERBOCKER GLORY

Another summer treat is a knickerbocker glory.

A tall glass filled with a selection of fruit, topped with ice cream, sauces and wafer to satisfy not only the sweet tooth in us but also to ease the heat.

This reminds me a bit of home.

We used to have halo-halo. A Filipino summer dessert of sweetened fruit, shaved ice, ice cream and flan.

Both are a nice addition to the summer menu. Please give it a try.

SPONGE CAKE

The classic sponge cake is the last one on our list for now.

With the help of my mother in law’s recipe, we make sponge sandwich, fairy cakes or cupcakes.

In a whim, Amon takes out the bowl and the ingredients from the cupboard.

Asks for help to heat the oven and makes everyone cupcakes with or without any occasion.

Amon sometimes does not follow the recipe to the t but she comes up with moist and delicious cupcakes based on Granny’s ingredient list.
